What is ADP Employment Report?

The ADP National Employment Report is the monthly US private-sector employment change report published by ADP, the largest US payroll-processing company. ADP processes payroll for roughly one in six US private-sector workers, giving it a real-time dataset of employment trends that historically previewed the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Non-Farm Payrolls report.

ADP releases monthly at 8:15 AM Eastern Time, on the Wednesday before each first-Friday NFP. The report covers private-sector employment only (no government, farm, or household workers) and reports the prior month’s change.

For futures traders, ADP has historically been treated as a leading indicator for NFP. In recent years (especially post-2022 methodology changes), the ADP-NFP correlation has weakened, but ADP still produces meaningful market moves on surprise prints and can shift NFP-day positioning. The 8:15 AM ET release timing puts ADP in the premarket high-volatility window.

How ADP Employment Report works

ADP mechanics for futures traders:

1. Release timing. Monthly at 8:15 AM ET on the Wednesday before NFP first-Friday. 15 minutes before the typical 8:30 AM data release slot.

2. Private-sector only. ADP covers private-sector employment exclusively — no government, farm, or household workers. NFP includes some categories ADP doesn’t, so ADP-NFP gaps are normal.

3. Surprise versus consensus. Markets react to ADP versus economist consensus, not to ADP versus the prior NFP. A +200K ADP print can be hawkish or dovish depending on whether consensus was +150K or +250K.

4. NFP preview value. ADP weakened as an NFP predictor after 2022 methodology changes, but still influences first-Friday positioning. A soft ADP often primes positioning for a soft NFP — and the market re-prices if NFP confirms or contradicts ADP.

5. Volatility profile. ES typically moves 8-20 points in the first 5 minutes on a meaningful ADP surprise. NQ moves 30-80 points. Less than NFP but enough to whipsaw narrow stops.

6. Prop firm rules. Most futures prop firms include ADP in their news-restriction lists for funded accounts. The 8:15 AM ET timing means tight news-window restrictions apply.

Worked example

Concrete ADP example — April 30, 2026:

Consensus going into 8:15 AM ET: +185K private payrolls. ES at 5,170 premarket.

The release: +245K (well above consensus). Hawkish surprise.

8:15:01 AM: ES dropped from 5,170 to 5,159 in 12 seconds — an 11-point move. ZN fell 6 ticks. The reaction was meaningful but smaller than a similar-sized NFP surprise would produce.

Friday’s NFP confirmed the strong ADP read with a +228K headline. The combined ADP + NFP two-day move was -28 points on ES — larger than either alone.

Why traders fail ADP Employment Report

Treating ADP as a precise NFP predictor. The historical correlation has weakened. ADP +245K with NFP coming in at +120K or +320K are both common outcomes. Use ADP as positioning context, not as a directional bet for Friday.

Holding through 8:15 AM on a funded account. ADP is on most prop firm news lists. The 11-point ES moves are small individually but enough to breach drawdown on aggressive positions.

Forgetting ADP is private-sector only. Methodology differences between ADP and NFP make perfect prediction impossible. ADP captures a different (though overlapping) labor market slice.
