Footprint Chart
A chart type that displays executed bid and ask volume at every price inside each candle — the X-ray view of what happened within the bar.
What is Footprint Chart?
A footprint chart opens the candle: instead of one OHLC summary, every price level inside the bar shows how much volume traded at the bid (aggressive selling) versus the ask (aggressive buying). It converts a candlestick from a shape into a ledger of the auction that built it.
How Footprint Chart works
Common configurations: bid×ask footprints (raw volume both sides), delta footprints (net difference), and volume profiles per bar. The classic reads: a stacked imbalance (several consecutive levels of dominant one-sided volume) signals initiative; heavy volume with no price progress signals absorption; a bar extreme finishing on an imbalance suggests an unfinished auction likely to be revisited.
Worked example
NQ pushes into a swing high and the footprint shows 3:1 sell imbalances stacked on the final three levels — aggressive buyers are being absorbed at the top. The short entry triggers on the failure of the last imbalance level, with the stop just above the absorption zone: a defined-risk trade built entirely from intra-bar evidence.

| Concept | Definition | Category |
|---|---|---|
| Footprint Chart this term | A chart type that displays executed bid and ask volume at every price inside each candle — the X-ray view of what happened within the bar. | Strategies |
| Order Flow | The study of executed trades and resting liquidity — who is buying, who is selling, and at what price — as the basis for trade decisions. | Strategies |
| Cumulative Delta | A running total of aggressive buying minus aggressive selling — the session-long scoreboard of which side is initiating. | Strategies |
| Volume Profile | A histogram of traded volume at each price level, revealing where the market found acceptance — and the high-volume and low-volume zones that act as future reference. | Strategies |
| Depth of Market | A real-time display of all resting buy and sell limit orders at every price level — the "order book" view that shows market structure and liquidity. | Futures Mechanics |
Why traders fail Footprint Chart
Reading footprints on every bar — the signal lives at meaningful levels; scanning imbalances in dead mid-range produces noise trades. Wrong contract for the read: footprints on thin micros paint unreliable pictures; read the full-size contract’s flow even when executing micros.
Frequently asked questions about Footprint Chart
What does a footprint chart show?
Executed volume at bid versus ask at every price inside each candle — revealing imbalances, absorption, and who was aggressive where a normal candle shows only the outline.
What platforms offer footprint charts?
Quantower, Sierra Chart, MotiveWave, Bookmap (as heatmap-adjacent views), and NinjaTrader via order-flow add-ons. TradingView's footprint support is limited by data granularity.
